Trust

Last night, we held a table read for INTERGLOBAL TRADING FUND.

I get my inner geek on for table reads. Those first few moments when you hear your words in the mouth of an actor are exhilarating. A table read brings forth a roller-coaster and emotions – and a whole lot of surprises… if you can trust your actors.

Trust your actors, for they are doing their job – they are taking your words, and the characters that you have shaped, and they are breathing life into them.

With each breath of life will come subtle changes; nuances. Good actors paint their characters with all of the colors of the palette, and, hopefully, you’ve given them a rich palette to work from.

Listen to your actors, for they will tell you when the words are false. You’ll know immediately if a line is too on the nose. Don’t just kill your darlings, slay them for your actors.

These characters are like a stock suit. You’ve had your table read; now it’s up to you to scurry off, make adjustments, and tailor each suit to fit your actor’s specific needs. That’s what we’ll be doing today. Once again, we’ll don our writer’s gloves and duke it out, both of us striving to hit every word out of the park, to do our actors, characters and story justice, and make the script sing. And by duke it out, I mean embrace the process with gusto; to revel in it all. For, we’re creative partners. At the end of the day, it’s all about trust.

Now, go write.

Trust the process, trust your partner, trust your instincts. Oh Your Highness, you are right as always. I love a good table read, it’s one of my favorite steps.
