I was in the midst of wrapping up a very long day, when I ran across this little gem via Twitter.
Proof again that John Hughes was a man among men.
The following blog details a ten-year long pen pal relationship between Hughes and Alison Byrne Fields, a young woman in the throes of the agony – and the confusion – of adolescence. I believe that Hughes’ encouragement and support saved a life – and a talent. Beautifully written.
We all need a mentor. Even those of us long past feckless youth. I’m glad that Hughes was there for her.
While you wind down your day, and prepare for the next, take a look, and read in awe and wonder… and cherish the gift that was John Hughes.
Now, go write.

Being a teacher for over thirty years, I like to think I have saved some lives. I’ve been told that my husband and I did save some kids by the kids themselves that showed up in the art room and the black box theatre. It saves MY life now that I am retired and look backward asking questions like, “Did I have a life? Did I really make a difference?” I can say YES…and it gives me such peace.
